Clean them well. If they start to hurt run a blow dryer near the ear, not close or hot enough to burn him, or put a dry hand towel in the dryer for a few minutes and then apply to side of face. Yes he can go out and play but his equilibrium may be off so watch him if he is wobbly, more then usually for a 14 month old, then you may want to stop play time for a bit until things balance out again for him. Avoid the cold, hats and hoods usually don't even help, the cold air and wind won't make it a worse infection but it will cause him pain. Be sure to use all medicine as directed and even if they say you don't need to come back in, go back to doctor for a check up to make sure the infection is completely gone, some times I don't go back for other obvious things but for an ear infection I always schedule a recheck, I can't see in his ears and he may be acting great but in a day or to he could be right back to feeling awful and we have to start all over again, poor things don't deserve that, better safe than sorry. Do your best to always keep his ears dry to cut the amount of infections he'll get down by half. Hope this help and that he and you feel better soon.
